Being a Tennessee native, it was kind of ironic that I had never toured the Hermitage. The irony, indeed, dripped greatly considering I come from an interior design background with a love of historic architecture. To remedy this private embarrassment, I visited the Hermitage earlier this week. Upon entering, I was given a headset and a device that allowed me to listen to the audio clips of my choosing. I was then shown a short video of the life of Andrew Jackson during which I learned about the man, not just the President who expanded America and who is on the twenty dollar bill, but the man who loved the home I was about to tour and the land surrounding it. Visiting a person's home has a way of humanizing them. I did not expect the stately Greek Revival home I saw after visiting the Jackson museum, but it was not easily overlooked! This "rural retreat" boasts over 8000 square feet of fourteen foot high ceilings, decorative wallpaper, four family rooms, two guest rooms (that could easily fit six of my current bedroom), a large dining room, two parlors, and two offices, all meticulously restored to its former glory in 1837. Listening to the tour guides in historic garb paint a picture of antebellum life made me long for a simpler time. As a self-proclaimed internet junkie, movie buff and fast food addict, I would likely not last long in that world, but I would be very interested in giving it a shot.
After the guided tour through the house I was left to fend for myself. I began wandering the grounds, exploring, while listening to the audio clips. At the back of the mansion were numerous destinations including the Hermitage garden, Jackson's tomb, slave cabins, the first Hermitage, Springhouse (or antebellum refrigerator), and the animals and farm land. As I walked, I made my way back to the main gate where I parted with the audio equipment. If you decide to go you must not forget to make a stop in the gift store and cafe! I had a wonderful time touring the house and grounds and learning so much about our seventh President that lived in my own backyard. I encourage everyone to visit!
