CHARLESTON!!! Every year the Low Country Civil War Show at the Galliard Center in downtown Charleston, SC seems to get better and better. It was great to see old friends and check out all of the new finds brought together under the same roof. This show continues to be one of the most fun and educational that we do on our yearly tour of the nation. Special thanks to Mike Kent and Co. for hosting such a fine gathering and thanks to Karole's Kitchen for reminding me what Gumbo is supposed to be! As with anywhere we go, it seems that we brought back a van that was a little more packed than when we left, but the key I've learned along the way in this business is to make money when you buy. The majority of the deals that I regret are the ones that I did not JUMP at when they confronted me. You never know when you'll see another full letter signed by Matthew Fontaine Maury folks!
A little more on Matthew Fontaine Maury, Confederate Naval Commander and 'Pathfinder of the Seas':
This year, Greg Snider and I took off and left Keith here to man the shop and hold down the fort. Greg and I had a fabulous time and were able to really dive in and spread our wings a bit when it comes to Civil War books and documents. We are a business that specializes in American Independence, but the Civil War is one of those periods that nearly every antiquarian book dealer in America (the South at least) needs to be fluent in as well the genres they really set out to specialize in. With our shop being just outside of Franklin, TN, we are also in the right part of the country for Civil War enthusiasts and we have tried to assemble a nice gathering of books and documents on this time period in the shop for those who come to visit us while touring the fabulous local Civil War spots (The Carnton Plantation, The Carter House, the Battlefield at Franklin, Stones River etc...).
The show was a great success for us and we appreciate all of the new clients made and the new dealer friends we discussed the future of our business with! It is always great to be around people of all walks of life who are a little crazy about collecting like we happen to be.
