Finding just the right book to create a fore-edge painting
is like digging for treasure! There are
lots of considerations that go into choosing the right book—it's content, the
number of pages, and the paper are just a few of the things I need to
examine.
So when I found The
Confessions of Saint Augustine on a hidden top shelf in an old book store
in McLean, Virginia,
my eyes glistened over. I had recently
returned from a retreat at a monastery—is there a connection? Umm, interesting I thought. The book had a lovely leather cover and well
done gilded edges. Everything seemed
right, except two things, one I couldn’t think of what I would paint on it, two
the price was a little more than I wanted to pay. A beautiful book, but what would
I do with
it, I wondered. I moved my hand to place
the book back on the shelf, but it was stuck to my hand like glue. Now I really felt that I was supposed to have
this book. Within 24 hours I knew what I
wanted to paint on the fore-edge, which was a portrait of Saint
Augustine.
The book I almost didn’t buy, had I listened to my mind,
rather than my heart turned out to be just wonderful and sold quickly.
In a few weeks I will have another heart-felt portrait—this
time of the great mystic, Saint Teresa of Ávila. Come back and see it and I will tell you
more about it...
But for now, come back next week, because I’m going to share
my biggest fore-edge painting challenge.
In the meantime, think about what your biggest challenge is, because I
am going to share a secret with you about challenges.
