As most of you already know, Yeoman's has been fortunate enough over the last couple years to make some great new author and songwriter friends. Our geographic location is most certainly a huge part of how and why the introductions have taken place, but our bonding with folks is most certainly the work of the staff and all of our partners. Last night, I am pleased to say was one of the most rewarding of my professional career. I have written of the power of the media when it comes to purveying books and most would simply scoff and say that it is 'obvious.' Why do more not try then??? Robert Hicks is an example to us all that when one thing slows down, another picks up. If nothing picks up, you're not trying hard enough. If you know you're trying hard, get on a new road because the one you're on is probably the wrong one. In the immortal words of Dennis Melhouse of First Folio Books,
"We have to fly the flag." You have to continually reinvent yourself and/or your passion to find new ways to do what is you love. Marshall Chapman summed it up last night on a stage at Green's Grocery when she said,
"most of life is just taking a shower and showing up." Most of life is just showing up, when you go with the flow and change with the passing of time as nearly all booksellers and songwriters must do. Songwriters can no longer rely on the same songs that sold in 1978. Booksellers can no longer rely on the same selling practices that worked in 1978. We have and will continue to adapt!
Greg and I took our showers last night and hitched a ride to Green's to fly the flag - the result was pure magic! Robert Hicks, a true friend and an amazing
connector, was kind enough to offer us an anchor spot at his first 'Old Time Radio Hour with Robert Hicks.' The show was held less than a mile from the shop and featured guests Mindy Smith, Marshall Chapman and Vince Gill. The three guests, Robert Hicks, Jake (the world's greatest dog) and about 100 storytellers and story lovers packed the house to hear the tales of songwriting and the power of the pen. For over two hours we sold books, talked with friends and shed tears alongside our neighbors when Vince played, 'Threaten me with Heaven.' Congrats to Robert on the show and we were so proud to be a part of it. Here's to many more hours of using the air waves and live internet feeds to push the power of the pen in the ongoing
'Battle of the Book.'
