A few weeks back we hosted one of our “Free Rare Book & Document Review” events here at the shop. We had several people bring in their finds in hopes of them being worth a small fortune. Unfortunately, there were no small fortunes found on that day, but we did have one visitor who made us smile, and provided a little hope for the future in this crazy industry we all love!
The young man was Daniel Hubin. Daniel and his family first came into our shop a few months back. After visiting, Daniel caught the collecting bug so many of us have running in our veins. Daniel had been saving up his money from doing his chores and what not and started purchasing old books he would find at yard sales and online. He had built quite a little collection in a short amount of time, including a few books that were worth a few hundred dollars.
In this age of Xboxes, mobile phones, texting, and the vast entertainment found on the internet presented to our youth, we need more Daniel’s to catch the collecting bug. Only then will our industry have hope for the future. I cannot imagine myself in another business that both provides for me and my family as well as having the added benefit of preserving history for all of mankind!
We hope that we were able to give Daniel a little guidance that day so that he will continue to be involved and grow in this industry, as well as share the joys of it with his friends and family. For those of you who meet someone like Daniel, please take the time to share with them that collecting can be cool (as well as important...), and not just for weird old people like us!
