I have spent an afternoon sanding the fore-edges of a book in preparation to be painted on. Sanding edges of books is not something one would think you have to do just to paint a picture on the edge. But, at last, all edges have to be sanded, even those not painted on. The surface has to be perfectly smooth, or otherwise you get a distorted painting.
But, then again, all artwork has lots of hidden preparation that the observer never imagines. Patience and a keen eye for detail are essential. The slightest variation in the surface can cause results one does not want. In this day of mass production, we forget the care and craftsmanship that goes into a one-of-a kind creation, such as fore-edge painting. We forget the value of owning a work of art, whether it is on a book, or it is a hand made chair.
A hand made work, as a fore-edge painting restores a balance in nature. Now, that statement may sound pretty awesome. Like, wow, how is that possible? But, it is true. For any handmade craft created in appreciation is then embedded with appreciative energy. That energy radiates into the world. It radiates to the individual who brings it into their home. Think about it.
