I have to say that I am excited. I just received the first of several chapters of Jeanne Bennett’s new book on fore-edge paintings. It is brilliant! Jeanne weaves history and storytelling into an art form that keeps you turning the pages.
The manuscript is beautifully illustrated with photos of clasps, corners, belts and bosses that date to 1590. Gilt brass clasps set in semi-precious cabochon stone are shown. Edges gilded with gold, marbled edges, stenciled edges, and paintings add more visual enjoyment to this distinctive and entertaining text on history and technique of fore-edge painting. An excellent photo of The Holy Bible printed in 1673 which is bound in purple goatskin with elaborate strap-work and gilt as well as gauffered edges. And this is just a small part of what this historic book by Jeanne Bennett will bring to everyone who loves books and the art of the fore-edge.
I will keep you posted on future developments and when this book is available.
Have a great day. I will be back from England in October with more ideas for fore-edge paintings.
