BACK FROM BALTIMORE WITH A FRESH LOAD OF RARE BOOKS…

Last weekend, Greg Snider and I had the pleasure of attending the 31st Annual Antiques and Antiquarian Book Fair in Baltimore, MD. Although I travel to DC at least once a year on an annual pilgrimage to the WWII and Vietnam Memorial with my father, this was the first time that I ventured out of the capital far enough to hit Baltimore. Like most, I’ve always heard that Baltimore is not the sort of city that you want to spend time in. The people are strikingly ungenerous and the city itself is a pit. Nothing could be further from the truth from where I sit. While there, the show was interrupted by both an earthquake as well as hurricane Irene. This did not sit well with the consumer and sales were not where we had hoped they would be, but these incidents brought both a city and a people together. As outsiders, we were showered with offers of help and great lengths were taken by the hotel to ensure that guests were safe, fed and as comfortable as they could be. I believe the hotel restaurant actually stayed open until the early morning hours to make sure that everyone was fed as most of the local restaurants had closed and boarded up last Saturday in particular.

The Palm Beach Show Group, the hosts of the annual extravaganza, did their best to handle such a precarious situation and overall, the show went off without a hitch. It was great to spend time with old friends and is always a benefit to get to know new ones. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled over the coming days for the ‘loot’ that we plundered while braving a hurricane (or at least a tropical storm J). Next stop will be the Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair! With Robert Hicks joining our crew for a signing at our booth, this show is sure to be one of our best ever. We hope to see you there and will always try to get you a FREE ticket if you email us. Rare books and documents from little ole’ Leiper’s Fork, TN are steadily making their way around the nation as we continue our path to becoming the finest rare bookstore in the Southern United States. Thanks to all…
