A few weeks back I shared my case binding experiences on Robert Hicks’s novel, The Widow Of The South. Today I want to show you a few photos of how this lovely paper back book became a hardback with a fore-edge painting. This is the nut shell version!
The first photo shows the original paper back cover and the completed fore-edge painting of Carrie Winder McGavock in the book press. The second photo shows polishing of the newly applied gold paint to the head of the book. The polishing makes the edges smooth, which is quite helpful for adding edge decoration. The third photo shows creating a new reinforced spine. This is important as mass produced books do not have the cut grooves and the threads which holds each and every page together in the manner a hand made book does. The new spine ensures page attachment longevity. The fourth photo shows the edge decoration which is painted after the gold paint is applied and polished. The last photo is of the completed fore-edge with its new covers. There were lots of steps not included here, but you get the idea. Hope you enjoyed this!
