LARRY MCMURTRY ON BOOKS, MOVIES AND THE BOOK TRADE

While on my way to the shop today I happened upon the NPR interview with Larry McMurtry and just had to write to let you all know about it. Larry has been a constant and driving force in American literature for over thirty years. His books have spoken to a generation of western fans, those interested in social change in America and those of us in the book trade. McMurtry is nearly as famous in our little piece of the world for his bookstores in Washington and Archer City, Texas as he is for being an author himself. His most recent books have really spoken to my soul as he has mentioned and/or given credit to almost all of the booksellers and antiquarian book dealers that I have studied and practically worshipped for over a decade of my life. Larry McMurtry has been there and done it and his example of professional practices in the book trade have helped model our vision and the place of Yeoman's in the world of rare books and documents.

A FEW TID-BITS:

"I can write characters that major actors want to play, and that's how movies get made."

Can it really be that simple?

"It's not simple, but it's practical," McMurtry says, citing Paul Newman's role in Hud. "People want to play my characters. Major actors that you can get money for, from a bank. You've got to finance it, and nobody's come up with a better way to finance it than the star system."
