Acronyms and abbreviations we use to describe rare books and documents
ADS - Autograph Document Signed: A document that is completely in the hand of the signatory.
ALS - Autograph Letter Signed: A letter that is completely in the hand of the signatory.
AMS - Autograph Manuscript Signed: A manuscript that is completely in the hand of the signatory.
ANS - Autograph Note Signed: A note that is completely in the hand of the signatory.
ARC - Advance Reading Copy: A copy of a book issued ahead of schedule to be distributed to the author, editors and reviewers.
AEG - All Edges Gilt: Indicates that all page edges of the three visible sides of a book have been gilded.
BAL - Bibliography of American Literature: This seven-volume work is a detailed bibliography of important American literature.
DJ - Dust Jacket: A paper cover protecting a book from dirt and wear. It may also be called a dust wrapper.
DS - Document Signed: A document that is generally typed or in the hand of a third party that is merely signed.
ED - Edition: All copies of a book printed from one typeset. An edition may have multiple printings.
GPO - Government Printing Office
LS - Letter Signed: A letter that is generally in the hand of a third party that is merely signed.
LTD - Limited Edition: Any edition limited to a specific number of copies printed.
ND - No Date: Generally means that no date of publication was given.
NP - No Place: Generally means that no date of publication was given.
SIG - Signature
SP - Signed Photograph
TLS - Typed Letter Signed: A typed letter, with the signatory just signing.
VOL - Volume
WAF - With All Faults: Generally means that a book or document has flaws and the seller is selling "as is."
WD - War Date
XLIB - Ex Libris: Ex-library
